President Reagan on Big Government and the Little Guy
May 30, 2017
Reagan: IN HIS WORDS
“You can’t be for big government, big taxes, and big bureaucracy and still be for the little guy.”
- Ronald Reagan
Taxes have been in the news recently. Republicans want to cut corporate and individual tax rates to spur growth in the economy. Ronald Reagan would applaud this effort. He knew that the American people were far better at determining how to spend money than the government.
Since Reagan was president, all types of hidden taxes have also made their way into our lives. Gas taxes have increased in many areas. Taxes on tobacco and alcohol have gone up. Now some cities want to tax sugary drinks.
Who do these types of taxes impact most? Low and middle-income earners. These taxes are a much larger percentage of their income than it is for higher-earning Americans.
Liberals preach they are looking out for the little guy, all while taking his money and wasting it on ineffective programs, or using it to pay off debt accumulated from past wasteful spending.
Big government, big taxes, and big bureaucracy don’t benefit the little guy. Big benefits big – which creates more big – in a big way.
President Reagan was a champion of the little guy and of small businesses. Regarding this, he said, “Entrepreneurs and their small enterprises are responsible for almost all the economic growth in the United States.”
Let’s hope lawmakers in Washington remember this and unleash the power of the little guy.

This isn't rocket science. All begins with draining the swamp.

I enjoy these articles very much and agree with President Reagan in every way. Here's praying that President Trump will succeed for us "little guys and gals" in every way.

Dems want more government control, so big giveaways can garner more votes and more control.
We all know where that leads in the long run, big government eventually has absolute power whether intended or not. -

Unfortunately, the Republicans aren't much better. Their just Democrats in slow motion. Look at their obstreperous unwillingness to change the tax code. I used to donate to them when Reagan was in office; not anymore.

Amen! I think that Washington has gotten for too big for it's own good, and all our so called elected officials must travel through some sort of a bubble once they cross into the Washington D.C. area which causes them to completely forget all their promises on the campaign trail, and become automated spending machines, only with our money. I'm talking both sides of the divide here. It's very easy to spend and spend when it's not your money that you are so freely spending. I firmly believe that Donald Trump although not quite another Ronald Reagan, sees this as a major problem and that is one of the major reasons he threw his hat into the Presidential ring in the first place. But now that he is trying to clean things up, people on both sides of the isle are fighting him tooth and nail. I firmly believe that if we are going to survive as a nation, we as "We the people" are going to have to rise up and demand that both congressmen and women and senators alike have mandatory term limits that they CAN'T make amendments to the constitution to change. Otherwise folks we are going to keep spiraling down this horrible tube until we are just like any other third world country.

First we need to fix the education system so we have educated voters unlike what we have now, that keeps voting the same self centered jerks over and over.Think about it, education is the only way to fix America.

The best way to help folk would be passing laws that make all health care providers post their prices. Why is that the only industry that keeps their prices secret until after your service? Posting prices would increase competition and lower costs.

Never expect the government to do the right thing until they are forced to after first failing at all the bad alternatives.

I agree that the current tax system is way too confusing and punishes many.
The current tax system taxes production and is a dis-incentive to those who would wish to make more either by business or other activities. The current system also does not tax the black market efficiently which loses billions of dollars annually to those who are able to easily cheat through cash trans actions.
The entire IRS and the current tax system should be done away with and we should start from scratch.
The way to make the entire system more fair and efficient is to end the income tax and go to a national VAT or transaction tax. This would incentivize production and make consumption more efficient. This in turn would make the economy grow at a rapid pace and in turn make the entire USA a richer place for all. A national sales tax with cut outs for certain percentages for food and medicines and incentives for low incomes and the disabled would be far more fair and efficient. It would effectively tax the underground economy and the extremely wealthy would no longer be able to shelter their wealth through things like "carried interest"
Education is another way to "help the little guy" Not everyone is college material. This is a fact. Too many highschoolers are pushed into college curriculum when they should be learning a trade, many of which pay far more than the average college graduate makes.
The problem is that these things may never happen. Most of the people and most of the Republicans and nearly all of the Democrats in power are against classical liberal values. -

I really wish President Trump would join Reagan.com. It amazes me how the things President Reagan spoke of in the 1980's are so relevant today.

It is frightening to see what so many young people, and old, don't know! Would they rather Hillary disarm us like England and France, make us easy targets for the killers of the world? Insanity in the dark abyss of lack of knowledge and facts is truly scary days ahead!
